Today I came across a new sweet spot in Bismarck, North Dakota, I was getting my hair cut by Doug, at Doug’s Place on Broadway. Doug has been my hair cutter for over 30 years, although some of that time I have lived elsewhere, such as Williamsburg, Virginia, St Paul, MN, but now that I am back in Bismarck, I am delighted to know he is still here. Superb hair cutter.
As I searched for a place to park, I turned the corner and discovered a wonderful new shop you must go to if you are in the Bismarck, ND area. It is called Sweet Treats. The owner, long time baker Rachel Allerdings, recruited her grandmother, mom, sister, and a friend to band together and help Rachel follow her sweet dream.
Rachel learned baking from her grandmother and mother, and her inspiration for the shop was her great-grandmother Bertha Hackett, who owned and operated the Hackett Cafe in Glenburn, North Dakota for many years. Three weeks ago Rachel opened to rave reviews, and her presence will no doubt make a sparkling difference to downtown Bismarck.
The interior of the shop is so delightful, one cannot be gloomy. It is a real zingy punch of pink, accompanied by a luscious lime green, all accented with black and white. Such a cheerful place creates an appetite, so stay for lunch and for $6.75 you can have a sandwich and a cup of soup. If you happen to be there on the right day, you will be served Knoephla soup, my all time favorite midwestern food. Today, however, they had creamy potato, which looked scrumptous.
A very creative concept, called a Cupcake Bar, provides you the opportunity to develop your own creation of sweet enjoyment. You pick the type of cupcake, selecting from vanilla, marble, red velvet and others. Then you get to select the frosting – gorgeous dollops of chocolate buttercream, vanilla buttercream, cream cheese, or cookies and cream. Then, your choice of Treats is whipped into the frosting. You can pick sprinkles, heath bars, butterfinger, coconut, nerds, mint chips, M & M’s , chocolate chips, Oreo, peanut butter cups, white chocolate chips, strawberries. Ahhhhh.
The hours of this not to miss experience are 9:30-5:30 M-Friday, and 10-2 Saturdays. They also bake incredible cakes, carmel rolls, cookies, popcorn balls and every few weeks the highlight of fresh homemade Grannies Donuts, scumptous cake donuts made by Rachel’s Grandmother from Minot. Check out updates on Facebook, at the link below. See you soon at Sweet Treats.
